Institutional Appetite Fuels Bitcoin ETF Inflows After Extended Slump

In Brief

  • Bitcoin ETFs saw renewed inflows after months of sluggish performance and institutional withdrawal.

  • Ethereum ETF flows remain mixed, but outflows are slowing and net gains still outweigh losses.

  • Solana outpaces other altcoins in ETF inflows; meme coins like DOGE continue to lag behind.

Following two consecutive quarters of sharp declines, institutional enthusiasm for spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) had dwindled noticeably. The much-anticipated 2025 BTC ETF failed to meet market expectations, trailing behind performance seen in 2024. For the past five months, spot Bitcoin ETFs were unable to register back-to-back weeks of positive inflows. Now, signs point to a change in momentum.

Bitcoin ETF Net Inflows Signal Renewed Interest

According to data from SoSoValue, Bitcoin ETF products attracted $568.45 million in net inflows this week, following $787 million the previous week. The last time consecutive weekly inflows were recorded dates back to January 16, marking a five-month drought. While the recent “green candles” are smaller compared to last year’s activity, the renewed buying sentiment for ETFs is encouraging in the aftermath of consistent outflows.

The Coinbase Premium Index on Friday indicated that selling pressure on Bitcoin had eased, though strong institutional demand had not yet materialized. Sustained ETF inflows suggest that appetite may soon rebound. As several key U.S. economic releases and market developments loom, observers are watching to see whether this streak of inflows will extend into a third consecutive week.

Bitcoin continues to hold support at the $66,000 level, with the ongoing period of consolidation expected to persist a bit longer. Should ETF investor backing strengthen, the current consolidation could resolve upward, potentially paving the way for the price to overcome $79,300 and set sights on the $81,500 threshold.

Mixed Flows for Altcoin ETFs: SOL Shines, ETH Lags

Ethereum’s (ETH) ETF products remain mired in uncertainty. Unlike Bitcoin, Ethereum ETFs have experienced uneven flows, alternating between two weeks of net inflows and four weeks of outflows. Despite diminishing outflows for four consecutive weeks, this week’s modest $23.56 million net inflow could hint at an end to the negative streak. However, the inflow remains weak, suggesting it’s too soon to declare a turnaround for the asset.

One key point about Ethereum ETF products is the shift in investor behavior among those who joined the market around July last year—many have morphed into long-term holders. Net inflows reached $5.43 billion in July and $3.87 billion in August of that year. Since then, outflows have persisted, but they have not negated the gains from earlier inflows, which is a positive sign for Ethereum’s broader ETF performance.

Among other altcoin ETFs, trends vary significantly:

  • XRP ETFs recorded $4 million in outflows, with the $16.62 million selloff on March 6 representing the largest single-day exit since January 29. Cumulative net inflows remain at $1.24 billion.
  • Solana (SOL) ETFs continue to see the most consistent inflows, with net investments almost uninterrupted since launch. This week, SOL ETFs attracted $24.05 million, bringing total net inflows to $957 million.
  • DOGE ETFs, however, remain largely inactive. Their performance underscores the limited institutional appeal of meme coin ETFs, especially outside of bullish market conditions.
  • Chainlink (LINK) ETF products show steady, though modest, inflows, with $2.87 million added this week.
