Fintech firm Metallicus has introduced the alpha version of DogecoinVM, a new payment layer that accelerates Dogecoin transactions by a factor of 300 on mainnet. Marshall Hayner, CEO of Metallicus and board member of the Dogecoin Foundation, highlighted the breakthrough as a technological answer to a challenge Elon Musk posed to the Dogecoin community in 2021.
Technical approach: Building on Metal Blockchain
Instead of altering Dogecoin’s underlying Core protocol, Metallicus engineers developed DogecoinVM as a separate, parallel layer running on the Metal Blockchain infrastructure. Hayner clarified the initiative, stating that DogecoinVM does not generate a new cryptocurrency or modify Dogecoin Core, but maintains full compatibility with Dogecoin’s Unspent Transaction Output (UTXO) model.
DogecoinVM enables Dogecoin users to continue using their current wallets and private keys. Hayner confirmed that “your existing Dogecoin wallets/keys work the same way,” and that native “D”-format addresses remain fully supported. This design allows users to access faster transactions without changing wallets or risking their existing holdings.
DogecoinVM drastically increases transaction speed while preserving direct compatibility with existing Dogecoin wallets and addresses, enabling users to make use of the upgrade seamlessly.
The speed enhancement results from replacing energy-intensive Proof-of-Work (PoW) with the Snowman consensus protocol, a form of Proof-of-Stake. With this architecture, transactions finalize in 0.15 to 0.25 seconds, and throughput is no longer constrained by Dogecoin’s block size limitations.
Mini dictionary: Snowman consensus protocol, an Avalanche-based Proof-of-Stake algorithm designed for fast, secure parallel transaction processing on blockchain networks.
Security measures and limited alpha phase
DogecoinVM operates as a two-way bridge where DOGE is locked on Dogecoin’s mainchain and a collateral-backed equivalent is issued at a 1:1 ratio within the VM. This collateralized token can be withdrawn instantly, allowing users to move assets seamlessly between the main network and DogecoinVM.
To ensure security at this test stage, source code is publicly available on GitHub, but the system to date has not yet completed an independent security audit. Metallicus is working towards implementing SOC 2 compliance, which is a strict security standard for financial systems, particularly in banking.
“It is live in alpha/beta on Metal Blockchain mainnet… but capped for safety,” noted the Metallicus team. For risk control, the platform imposes strict caps, limiting individual deposits to 100 DOGE, and recommends users only deposit small amounts during the alpha phase.
| Feature | Dogecoin Core | DogecoinVM |
|---|---|---|
| Consensus | Proof-of-Work | Snowman (Proof-of-Stake) |
| Transaction speed | Minutes | 0.15–0.25 seconds |
| Block size limits | Strict | Not limiting |
| Security audit | Completed | Pending |
| Wallet compatibility | Native | Native |
Vision for Dogecoin in fintech and on X
While DogecoinVM’s alpha debut is limited in scope, Metallicus leadership views this launch as a stepping stone towards integration in global fintech and banking. The team is consciously steering clear of speculative fervor, emphasizing regulatory compliance and gradual expansion.
Hayner outlined ambitions for practical deployment, stating that the long-term vision is to integrate fast cryptocurrency settlements into the payment frameworks of banks, credit unions, and digital platforms. A key target for these real-world applications is the social network X, where speed and scalability are essential for payment services.
The broader goal remains practical use in fintech, banks, credit unions, and on large platforms such as X, leveraging high-speed cryptocurrency settlements for mainstream financial operations.
