The Nasdaq index managed to recover most of its earlier declines on Thursday, after initially dropping by 2 percent at the opening bell. This rebound followed emerging news that Iran is preparing a protocol with Oman to manage shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz—an area critical for global oil transportation. The development appears to have eased concerns in the region, which is a vital chokepoint for world energy markets.

Rapid drop in oil prices

Just days earlier, the price of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude had surged to as high as $115 per barrel, fueled by recent statements from U.S. President Donald Trump that heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran. Yet, the reports detailing the prospective Iran-Oman protocol triggered a sharp turnaround, with oil prices retreating by roughly $5 per barrel. Analysts and market participants interpreted the news positively, given that it suggested a reduced likelihood of disruption to oil shipments through the region.

Iranian officials have emphasized that their actions aim not at tightening control, but at improving coordination. Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran’s deputy foreign minister responsible for legal and international affairs, noted that even during normal times, monitoring vessel traffic in the strait is conducted in cooperation with coastal states under established procedures.

Gharibabadi also highlighted that the proposed measures were not designed to restrict passage. Instead, he said, “the main objective is to facilitate safe and uninterrupted navigation and to enhance the services provided to vessels transiting the region.”

Volatility in cryptocurrencies and tech stocks

President Trump’s statements late Wednesday, suggesting potentially tough measures against Iran, had a significant impact on the cryptocurrency market. Bitcoin, along with other major digital assets, saw marked declines—Bitcoin fell about 3 percent, retreating to around $66,700. Leading altcoins such as Ethereum also experienced similar losses in value during this period.

This downward movement in the digital asset market was echoed by some publicly traded companies closely linked to the sector. Shares in Coinbase and Robinhood posted losses over the previous 24 hours as investor sentiment weakened in response to geopolitical uncertainties and price volatility in risk assets.

However, following the diplomatic initiatives between Iran and Oman, the markets managed to recoup part of the sharp losses that had accumulated. Despite the partial recovery, analysts noted that the general tone across crypto and technology stocks remained weaker than in previous sessions, reflecting ongoing caution among traders.

In light of these recent developments, there is continued close attention on diplomatic maneuvers in the Middle East and their combined effects on both the energy and digital finance markets. Market watchers say further gains or losses will likely hinge on whether stability can be maintained in the region’s strategic shipping lanes and if broader anxieties around geopolitical risk subside.
