Legendary futures trader and Factor LLC CEO Peter Brandt has shifted his stance on Bitcoin, opening a long position following a significant technical breakout that ended the cryptocurrency’s extended downtrend.
Brandt’s strategy shift follows rare pattern breakout
Brandt, a well-known analyst in global trading circles, previously held a bearish view on Bitcoin after sustained price declines. He explained that he had anticipated further downside, citing a low probability of bullish momentum due to ongoing weakness in Bitcoin’s trend.
He looked specifically at the development of an inverted head-and-shoulders pattern on the daily chart, noting the unusually drawn-out formation of the right shoulder. In Brandt’s assessment, this chart structure offered a 60% chance of resolving to the downside, based on both its technical pattern and prevailing market sentiment at the time.
However, Bitcoin’s price action this week provided a decisive turning point. Following a stretch of relative stability, the market saw a powerful upward surge. Bitcoin surpassed resistance at $64,000, established new support, and emerged from several weeks of consolidation with a clear bullish breakout.
On the daily chart for CME’s Bitcoin futures (BTC-056 contract), the price exceeded the neckline of the rare inverted head-and-shoulders reversal pattern, signaling a new trend in the market cycle. This move triggered rapid price acceleration, with the futures contract reaching around $72,335 in today’s session—a net daily gain of $2,585.
Mini dictionary: Inverted head-and-shoulders pattern, a technical analysis chart pattern that predicts a potential reversal of a downtrend to an uptrend, characterized by three price troughs with the middle trough (the “head”) lower than the others (“shoulders”).
Trader responds to criticism over sudden reversal
Following his pivot, Brandt faced criticism on social media platforms, where some users questioned the value of his 60/40 probability model, especially in the context of a single, high-stakes trade.
Addressing these remarks, Brandt invoked the law of large numbers, noting that a trading edge such as a 60/40 statistical advantage becomes meaningful when applied over many trades, rather than in an isolated instance. He clarified that his decision to “buy the breakout,” regardless of previous bias, was based on his systematic approach as a professional trader.
Brandt emphasized that “the completion of the H&S bottom changed that.” Rather than debate with the market, he opted for discipline, stating, “I bought the breakout for better or worse.”
He pointed to risk management principles, saying a consistent edge only proves itself through a series of trades, not just one.
Factor LLC, Brandt’s trading firm, is recognized for technical analysis and futures trading strategies. Brandt’s ongoing commentary is closely watched in both cryptocurrency and traditional trading communities for its blend of experience and systematic risk management approaches.
