SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce has announced her resignation from the US Securities and Exchange Commission, effective October 2. Peirce, widely recognized in the cryptocurrency sector as “Crypto Mom” for her advocacy of transparent, rules-based oversight of digital assets, shared her resignation publicly on her X social media account on Friday.

In her resignation letter, Peirce expressed gratitude to the president for what she described as the honor of her professional life, and acknowledged the leadership of Chairman Paul Atkins and Commissioner Mark Uyeda. Both Atkins and Uyeda are currently the agency’s remaining commissioners and are members of the Republican Party.

Peirce’s tenure at the SEC spanned roughly eight years. She also led the SEC’s Crypto Task Force, having assumed that director role on February 4, 2025. Peirce’s official SEC term expired in June 2025, but she remained in office under a provision that permits commissioners to serve up to 18 months beyond their term if no successor is appointed.

Peirce thanked the president for the opportunity to serve as a commissioner and acknowledged the outstanding leadership of her colleagues, stating her departure comes under the stewardship of Chairman Atkins and Commissioner Uyeda.

The SEC, or Securities and Exchange Commission, serves as the primary federal regulator of US securities markets and has played a central role in the oversight of crypto regulation and enforcement.

Since the establishment of the Crypto Task Force, the group has actively examined how current securities laws pertain to digital assets and decentralized financial systems.

Transition to academia at Regent University

Peirce will join Regent University’s law school in Virginia as an associate professor in November. The university has stated that Peirce is expected to contribute to the institution’s focus in areas such as federal litigation, securities law, and digital assets education.

Cointelegraph initially reported her planned appointment in May. With her departure, her seat at the SEC may remain vacant for an extended period. Caroline Crenshaw, the most recent Democratic commissioner, also departed the agency in January upon completion of her extended term, and a replacement has not yet been nominated by President Donald Trump.

Since President Trump took office in January 2025, the SEC has enacted significant changes to its approach on crypto matters. The agency has reportedly ended multiple enforcement actions and inquiries against crypto firms, including some linked to Trump and his associates.

Policy outlook and impact

Throughout her service, Peirce has been vocal on digital asset issues. In June, she remarked that developers sharing open-source code should not fall under federal securities regulations, contributing to an ongoing debate about developer responsibility in decentralized finance systems.

These remarks are seen as part of a broader movement inside the SEC to shift away from so-called “regulation by enforcement,” an approach Chairman Atkins has critiqued in recent public comments.

Peirce’s exit marks the end of an era characterized by industry advocacy for clearer regulatory standards and may affect the direction of US financial policy toward the digital asset market in the coming years.

Peirce’s perspective on code publishing has reinforced the SEC’s evolving stance, encouraging an open regulatory dialogue about developer accountability and the future of decentralized innovation.
