Seven Bitcoin wallets originating from the earliest days of the network have become active after nearly 16 and a half years of complete inactivity. These wallets, created in March 2010, collectively moved 350 BTC valued at approximately $28 million in a series of transactions that took place this week.

Historic coins on the move

Blockchain analysis reveals that each of the seven wallets transferred 50 BTC, which matches the block reward awarded to miners during Bitcoin’s formative period. These coins, generated just over a year after the network’s launch in January 2009, have remained untouched until now, sparking renewed curiosity within the crypto community.

At today’s prices, a block reward of 50 BTC translates to nearly $4 million per wallet, substantially more than the coins’ original value when mined. The combined $28 million was moved without splitting the transactions, suggesting the wallets may have a single owner or group controlling several early mining addresses.

Many observers view the event as a significant on-chain occurrence, since Bitcoin mined in March 2010 almost never leaves its original wallets.

Despite the large nominal sum involved, there is no concrete evidence yet that these coins are being sent to exchanges or that their owners intend to sell. On-chain movement alone offers few signals of market intent unless additional flows toward trading venues emerge in follow-up transactions.

Bitcoin price and technical levels

The transfers coincided with Bitcoin trading near record highs. The world’s largest digital asset is changing hands at around $79,850, after briefly touching $81,000 earlier in the day. Over recent weeks, Bitcoin’s price has shown strong upward momentum, outperforming its main moving averages.

Currently, the 20-day moving average is close to $75,116, while the 200-day sits at approximately $72,637. Intermediate averages remain between $69,000 and $70,000, indicating the market continues to trend higher. Technical indicators reflect this strength; the daily relative strength index (RSI) is at 66.9, pointing to healthy bullish sentiment but remaining short of overbought conditions.

Resistance in the $81,000 to $82,000 range has limited further advances, as multiple recent attempts to break above this level have stalled.

Although the 350 BTC moved is a negligible amount compared to Bitcoin’s daily trading volume, attention has focused on the coins’ provenance and the rarity of such old funds moving. Large transfers from historic wallets rarely occur and often draw interest due to lingering speculation that they might be linked to early participants or even Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto.

Market impact and significance

For now, the transactions remain a curiosity unless the coins are deposited to exchanges, which could affect short-term supply and potentially impact the price. If the funds stay within private wallets, their movement will likely remain an unusual historical footnote.

The presence of long-dormant Bitcoin re-entering circulation reminds observers of the scale and mysteries embedded within Bitcoin’s early history. Whether these coins will play a role in market dynamics depends on any future moves the current holders decide to make.

Mini dictionary: Satoshi-era Bitcoin, a term referring to Bitcoin mined during the earliest years of the network, typically 2009–2011, when founder Satoshi Nakamoto was presumably still active.
