Severe consensus vulnerability tested on Bitcoin Signet network with attack block demonstration

In Brief

  • Bitcoin Core developers will demonstrate attack blocks on Signet to showcase a consensus vulnerability.

  • The Great Consensus Cleanup with BIP 54 seeks to address slow block verification risks on the network.

  • Participants can observe using the bitcoin-tui tool and freshly set up Signet nodes for safety.

A group of Bitcoin Core developers plans to conduct a demonstration on the Signet test network this week, focusing on “attack blocks” that take substantially longer to verify than standard blocks. The public demonstration has been scheduled for April 7, with additional sessions on April 8 and April 9, enabling users across varied time zones to participate and observe in real time. Signet, a Bitcoin test environment created for safe protocol experimentation, currently features a blockchain approaching 33 GB in size.

Scope and purpose of the demonstration

The upcoming sessions aim to highlight the seriousness of one of four main consensus vulnerabilities currently targeted by the Great Consensus Cleanup initiative through Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 54 (BIP 54). The vulnerability, if left unaddressed, could allow specifically constructed blocks to dramatically slow down network verification processes, underlining risks for users and node operators.

During the demonstration, participants can spin up a Bitcoin Core node on Signet and directly monitor as blocks are mined and processed. Detailed instructions are available for those interested in checking their node’s logs to measure verification times. This event will not showcase the absolute worst-case scenario, as organizers are withholding some technical specifics to avoid empowering potential attackers with too much information. Even so, the blocks produced will take significantly longer to validate compared to typical network activity.

The Signet network was chosen for its stability and suitability for safe trialing of potentially disruptive protocol changes. As a dedicated test chain, it allows Bitcoin developers to reproduce and observe consensus-level issues without exposing the main Bitcoin network to risk.

Developers have put together a patch for the demonstration, enabling visualization of attack blocks through a terminal-based GUI. This software, called “bitcoin-tui,” provides a real-time interface showing details of block verification and potential slowdowns during the test sessions.

Tools, participation and safety considerations

The bitcoin-tui project, maintained by developer AJ Towns, allows users to track block-processing activity during the demonstration. Users interested in participating need to ensure their Bitcoin Core node is running with the appropriate configuration settings and can follow build instructions from the public repository to access this interface.

Participants are encouraged to only use freshly installed nodes without any funds on the device, as the rapid-release patch for this event has not undergone a comprehensive audit. Organizers have underlined that the demonstration software is limited in scope and is designed for non-mainnet usage, minimizing security risk for cautious testers.

The demonstration also caters to those preferring a graphical overview, rather than examining raw log files, as the “Slow Blocks” tab in bitcoin-tui presents verification progress in an accessible format.

Signet is utilized primarily by developers and protocol researchers seeking to trial emerging improvements or stress test the consensus rules. Unlike the main Bitcoin chain, it is intended for risk-free experimentation and facilitates collaboration among the Bitcoin development community.

This is one of a series of initiatives aimed at identifying and pre-emptively resolving weaknesses in the Bitcoin consensus codebase, especially those with the potential to affect block propagation and validation speeds across the network.

By participating in or observing the demonstration, users can gain a clearer picture of how consensus vulnerabilities might affect the network, and why proposed updates like BIP 54 are considered priorities among maintainers and contributors.
