Hawkins County Commissioners in Tennessee have unanimously approved a new prohibition on crypto mining facilities and data centers, expanding measures first imposed in 2025. The most recent vote, which passed 12-0, targets the establishment, construction, installation, expansion, and operation of these businesses in all unincorporated areas of the county.

Unanimous decision builds on previous actions

Monday’s decision reinforces earlier moves by local officials to control cryptocurrency-related activities, following initial restrictions passed in September 2025. Previously, county authorities intervened to prevent ExoticRidge, a crypto mining company, from launching operations in the region.

In January, the county passed a resolution to reaffirm its authority over digital asset operations, laying the groundwork for stricter enforcement. These actions reflect ongoing concern among Tennessee officials over the impact of crypto mining facilities on the local environment and communities.

The ExoticRidge case has been particularly influential in shaping local policy. After months of negotiation, ExoticRidge and county representatives worked on a settlement to permit the facility’s construction and operation under stringent conditions. One key requirement proposed would limit operational noise to below 80 A-weighted decibels (dBA) at the property line, preventing higher levels for extended periods within any four-hour window.

The proposed settlement with ExoticRidge outlined that the company must not exceed 80 dBA in sound at the facility’s boundary for more than 30 minutes in any given four-hour span, emphasizing the county’s focus on community well-being and environmental standards.

Wider crackdown across Tennessee

These regulatory steps come as part of a growing wave of measures at both local and state levels in Tennessee aimed at regulating cryptocurrency businesses. On July 1, a state law took effect banning the use and installation of cryptocurrency ATMs and kiosks across Tennessee. This regulation, which was signed into law in April, specifically targets incidents where residents—particularly seniors—have fallen victim to scams by sending money through these machines.

Authorities cited a need to safeguard citizens after repeated reports of fraudulent transactions involving digital currencies and automated kiosks. The recent ban on crypto ATMs and kiosks is one of the strictest statewide measures of its kind in the US, seeking to curb scam-related losses and increase oversight.

The combination of local and statewide action provides a multi-layered policy framework for addressing challenges arising from the cryptocurrency sector. State officials continue to monitor the ongoing evolution of digital asset regulations as they address technology-driven risks.

Tech-driven innovations and diverse options

As the regulatory landscape for cryptocurrencies evolves, platforms such as 1stepSwap are introducing new ways for users to bridge traditional finance and the crypto ecosystem. By bringing real-world assets onto the blockchain, 1stepSwap enables investors to access shares of major US companies and commodities like gold and silver, directly through their wallets. This technology removes conventional barriers and intermediaries, streamlining the process for portfolio diversification. Notably, the platform finds the best available price on the market within seconds, giving users immediate access to leading stocks at optimal rates.

Market observers say the shifting regulatory environment in Tennessee may shape the actions of both residents and companies navigating digital asset platforms, while innovative solutions continue to emerge for managing and trading a range of assets.
