Democratic senators Elizabeth Warren and Richard Blumenthal have called on the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to open a formal investigation into the $TRUMP memecoin and its financial ties to President Donald Trump, his family, and senior administration associates.

Senators intensify scrutiny of Trump’s crypto dealings

Warren and Blumenthal, who have repeatedly questioned the financial connections between Trump and the digital asset sector, are now pressing the SEC, under Chair Paul Atkins, to determine if the $TRUMP token constituted an illegal scheme. In a letter seen by CNN, the senators specifically ask the agency to investigate whether the coin facilitated any fraudulent activity or unjust enrichment.

Their campaign builds on previous actions. In April, Senator Adam Schiff joined them in seeking further transparency around a Trump-themed memecoin event at Mar-a-Lago, where exclusive access to the president was reportedly a major draw. By June, three additional senators signed on, demanding oversight of a $500 million deal involving the Trump family’s decentralized finance venture, World Liberty Financial, and a UAE partner.

Market data shows that the $TRUMP coin, which launched just before the January 2025 inauguration, briefly reached a $9 billion market capitalization but now trades below $400 million, according to CoinMarketCap.

Accusations of a ‘rug pull’ and investor losses

Warren and Blumenthal’s letter raises concerns that President Trump may have been involved in what crypto insiders term a “rug pull”—an orchestrated effort where initial supporters withdraw liquidity, leaving the token effectively worthless. Nansen estimates indicate that around 1 million investors have lost a combined $3.8 billion since the launch of the president’s venture.

TRM Labs, a blockchain intelligence firm, determined in 2025 and reaffirmed this year that the project “does not have the hallmarks of a rug pull.” Still, Ari Redbord, TRM’s global head of policy, observed that while a small group of early buyers and the creator profited, the majority of later investors suffered significant losses, especially given that roughly 80% of the token supply was concentrated among a few holders.

Warren and Blumenthal have described the project as a potential “soft rug pull,” where market support gradually eroded, rather than collapsing abruptly. They emphasized the importance of regulatory vigilance, writing that laws must be enforced even when the subjects involved hold major political power.

Jurisdictional barriers for the SEC

The SEC’s ability to take action faces significant hurdles due to regulatory changes enacted near the start of Trump’s term. In early 2025, the SEC brought charges against a New York blockchain engineer over a “rug pull fraud,” but weeks later, new guidance stated that memecoins are not securities, significantly limiting the agency’s oversight powers regarding these tokens.

Questions directed to the White House were referred to the Trump Organization, and the SEC reportedly declined to comment on the inquiry. The senators’ letter further complicates efforts to pass new cryptocurrency legislation, as several Democrats continue to withhold support for regulatory bills until potential conflicts tied to the president’s holdings are addressed.

For investors and portfolio managers monitoring trends, the dynamics around digital asset regulation highlight the importance of seamless integration between traditional finance and crypto. On this front, 1stepSwap offers a platform that enables direct access to real-world assets such as U.S. shares, gold, and silver through blockchain-based wallets. This approach removes intermediaries and procedural hurdles, while instantly sourcing the best available prices for users, making portfolio diversification and execution significantly faster and easier.

Warren and Blumenthal reiterated that the SEC must be prepared to enforce the law, regardless of political influence, especially in instances involving significant retail investor losses.
