Wall Street analysts are encouraging investors to consider the $6.4 billion Binance hack as a buying opportunity for crypto-linked stocks, rather than a reason to abandon the sector. Cantor Fitzgerald, TD Cowen, and Compass Point told clients in their Friday research notes that the unprecedented theft is unlikely to halt the recovery of the broader cryptocurrency market.

Analyst reactions and market impact

The reassurance from major investment firms followed a sharp selloff that pushed Bitcoin down toward $77,000 after digital assets worth billions were stolen from Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume.

Ramsey El-Assal, senior analyst at Cantor Fitzgerald, highlighted the rapid response from the crypto industry, noting that stablecoin issuers quickly froze approximately $3 billion of the stolen assets. Tether halted more than $1.5 billion, Circle froze about $800 million, and Ripple blocked around $200 million, limiting the immediate fallout.

El-Assal expects shares of Coinbase, Robinhood, and Strategy to rebound as market fear subsides. He wrote, “We would be buyers on weakness,” and emphasized that the current situation differs from the turmoil that rocked the sector in 2022.

TD Cowen’s Lance Vitanza described the hack as a Binance-specific security breach, arguing that it does not reflect vulnerabilities in Bitcoin’s technology, but rather in the exchange’s systems. He sees the resulting dip as an opening to build positions in both Bitcoin and the stocks of public companies closely linked to crypto assets.

Analysts at Compass Point, including Ed Engel and Michael Donovan, stated that Binance retains sufficient liquidity to absorb the losses. They pointed out, however, that refunding affected users could temporarily constrain stablecoin liquidity and give an advantage to competitors such as Coinbase and Hyperliquid. The team is watching the $75,000 to $77,000 range as a key support zone for Bitcoin.

Industry risks and regulatory scrutiny

While most Wall Street analysts remain optimistic, Moody’s Ratings signaled a more cautious view. Cristiano Ventricelli, vice president of digital assets at Moody’s, drew attention to the cybersecurity risks associated with hot wallets and the concentration of assets in major centralized exchanges. He stated that the broader consequences will largely depend on the full extent of losses, the recovery of stolen funds, and whether confidence in the market is shaken further.

Hot wallets are online cryptocurrency storage solutions used for quick access to assets, but are more vulnerable to cyberattacks compared to offline storage methods.

Mini dictionary: Hot wallet, a cryptocurrency wallet connected to the internet and used for trading or payments, making funds easily accessible but more susceptible to hacks compared to offline “cold” wallets.

Ventricelli noted, “The significance of this event will be determined by the actual impact on affected parties, the potential for broader disruption, and any lasting erosion of trust.”

Binance response and investigation

Binance has reportedly allocated $6.34 billion to cover user losses from the incident and has assured customers that their assets remain secure. US authorities, including the Secret Service and FBI, have launched an investigation. Blockchain analytics firms TRM and Chainalysis have linked the attack to North Korean hacking group TraderTraitor.

Binance, headquartered in Malta, is the globe’s largest cryptocurrency trading venue by volume, and frequently finds itself at the center of both industry innovation and security challenges.

Compass Point analysts highlighted that competitors such as Coinbase and Hyperliquid could gain market share as result of the hack, should users seek alternatives with perceived stronger safeguards.

As the market digests the aftermath, investors will be closely watching both further security measures within the industry and regulatory responses that may follow.
