Rumors are circulating among Bitcoin (BTC) coders following the challenges they have faced since the launch of Bitcoin Ordinals, with the inclusion of the BRC-20 standard. Bloomberg reported on June 4 that some coders are aligned on the issue.

Coders known for their discussions and debates on various aspects of the Bitcoin blockchain are responsible for keeping the network alive. However, the distribution of meme tokens through BRC-20, particularly after the tremendous rise of PEPE (PEPE), didn’t sit well with many Bitcoin loyalists on Twitter.

Current Situation in the Bitcoin Sphere

While some defended the idea of trying an unconventional path, others believed this experiment was not in line with Bitcoin’s fundamentals. According to Bloomberg’s report, Bitcoin developer Ali Sherief, in an email sent to the developer group, stated:

Worthless tokens are threatening the smooth and normal use of the Bitcoin network as a peer-to-peer cryptocurrency.

Rodarmor also continued his previous stance by stating that the Bitcoin layer is not a refuge for meme tokens.

At the beginning of the year, Casey Rodarmor announced Ordinals. At that time, they aimed to allow users to write digital content such as video, audio, and text on satoshi, the smallest unit of Bitcoin.

Unexpectedly, Rodarmor’s experiments resulted in Inscriptions reaching a high number like 10 million. This situation led Domo, the so-called blockchain analyst, to develop the BRC-20 token standard on the network.

Critical Statement for Bitcoin

Domo’s action led to another Ordinals success with BRC-20 tokens reaching a market value of 1 billion dollars. However, it seemed that Jameson Lopp, the founder of Casa, did not have many issues with token distribution. The leader of the crypto storage provider supporting his stance noted:

The Bitcoin network was supposed to be an auction market for the blockchain where data is stored, and Ordinals only increased the demand for this.

Meanwhile, another Bitcoin developer, Luke Dashjr, supported Sherief’s view. He stated that Ordinals transactions are like spam and should be kept away from Bitcoin’s blockchain.

In line with his belief, Dashjr created a program called Ordisrespector to ensure that the computer nodes on the network fulfill the aforementioned commands.

Spam filtering should have been implemented months ago. It has been a standard part of Bitcoin Core since day one.

The market value of BRC-20 tokens has declined to 475 million dollars. This situation could indicate a decrease in interest and creation of tokens. On the other hand, BTC continues to trade below $26,000.
