Bitcoin is advancing toward a major technical milestone on its three-day chart, with the 20-period exponential moving average (EMA) approaching a crossover above the 200-period EMA. Technical analysts closely monitor this development, often termed a “golden cross,” as it has historically coincided with strong upward momentum in Bitcoin’s price.

Macro environment and onchain signals

The latest rally comes as markets observe encouraging signs that macroeconomic headwinds may be easing. October’s correction in Bitcoin followed considerable pressure from several sources, including rising US Treasury yields, high oil prices, muted demand for US-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs, and increased profit-taking among investors.

By mid-October, markets assessed an 18% probability of the US Federal Reserve hiking rates that month. Brent crude oil prices also retreated from nearly $110 a barrel to about $105, providing some relief to risk assets, though energy costs remained elevated.

Investor attention is also shifting toward the November 3 US midterm elections, as traders seek greater clarity about the country’s legislative direction. The prospect of a closely divided Senate heightens policy uncertainty and could impact investor sentiment.

On blockchain networks, Bitcoin’s exchange reserves, which measure the amount of BTC held on trading platforms, remain relatively low, despite a modest uptick. This suggests that available selling supply is contained compared to previous periods, potentially providing price support.

The Apparent Demand metric, which tracks short-term shifts in coin flows and investor sentiment, has rebounded sharply from deeply negative readings. While the figure remains below zero, the improvement is seen by some analysts as a constructive sign. Additionally, whale holdings—a term referring to entities or individuals controlling large quantities of Bitcoin—have risen to 3 million BTC and stayed at elevated levels throughout the recent correction. This trend signals that major holders have either maintained or expanded their positions.

These technical and onchain signals, together with stabilizing macro conditions, are contributing to a growing view that Bitcoin may have found a bottom in October, though confirmation still depends on sustained demand and continued price strength.

Golden cross signal and historical performance

The three-day golden cross pattern draws attention because of its previous strong performance. Following similar crossover events in 2019, Bitcoin surged by approximately 50.73%. The 2020 occurrence saw an 18.38% increase, while the 2023–2024 signal produced a gain of 32.23%.

On average, these past signals delivered a 33.78% return, although the sample size is limited and each rally unfolded over different market environments and timeframes. Market strategists caution that moving averages are lagging indicators, and golden crosses can sometimes form after a substantial price recovery has already taken place. Therefore, investors should not interpret them as guarantees of further immediate gains or as precise price targets.

Currently, Bitcoin is trading at $84,011, having briefly dipped below $82,000 earlier in the week. Bulls are now watching for a move above $87,438, a resistance level that, if surpassed, could bring $90,000 back into focus for the first time since January. A sustained decline below the long-term moving average could, however, challenge the bullish case.

YearGain After Golden Cross
2019+50.73%
2020+18.38%
2023–2024+32.23%
Average+33.78%

If a similar outcome follows this year, Bitcoin could potentially finish 2026 trading above the psychologically significant $100,000 mark. However, analysts emphasize that such projections are speculative, and historical patterns are not always reliable indicators of future performance.

Traders continue to monitor both onchain and macroeconomic variables, aiming to gauge whether Bitcoin’s technical breakout can sustain its momentum into year-end.

Mini dictionary: Golden cross, a technical chart pattern that occurs when a short-term moving average crosses above a long-term moving average, often interpreted by traders as a bullish signal suggesting the start of an upward trend.
