IBM links Digital Asset Haven to Swift blockchain, enabling 24/7 tokenized payments

In Brief

  • 🚨 IBM connects Digital Asset Haven to Swift’s blockchain, supporting 24/7 tokenized payments.

  • 💡 Banks gain instant tokenized transfers using familiar ISO 20022 messages and blockchain rails.

  • 🚀 Tokenized deposit volume has jumped to $7 billion from under $2 billion since early 2024.

  • 🌐 $USDT is a stablecoin, while these new tokenized deposits are issued directly by banks.

IBM has announced the integration of its Digital Asset Haven platform with Swift’s blockchain-based shared ledger, enabling banks to conduct round-the-clock tokenized deposit transfers using existing ISO 20022 payment messages.

Seamless Institutional Integration

The new IBM Swift ledger, unveiled on September 24, 2026, introduces an ISO 20022 adapter that converts traditional payment instructions into tokenized settlements. Despite the move to digital assets, legal finality for transactions remains anchored in established correspondent banking systems.

This partnership combines IBM Digital Asset Haven—a custody and asset tokenization solution tailored for financial institutions—with Swift’s shared ledger, which is built upon a Consensys blockchain prototype. The resulting coordination and synchronized record layer spans Swift’s extensive network of over 12,500 institutions operating in more than 200 jurisdictions.

According to IBM, the integration allows banks to initiate, monitor, and reconcile deposits using familiar messaging formats, avoiding the need for disruptive changes to core payment infrastructure.

Tokenized deposits through this system represent commercial bank money in a new digital form, as opposed to stablecoins such as USDC, USDT, or PYUSD, which are claims on non-bank issuers.

Building Blocks for Developers and Banks

For application developers and system integrators, workflows designed in Digital Asset Haven now gain direct access to Swift’s ledger, eliminating the complexity of custom middleware. This enhancement positions IBM to facilitate interoperability between permissioned banking networks and public blockchains, including Ethereum.

On the deployment front, IBM has expanded Digital Asset Haven with on-premises support for its Z and LinuxONE servers. These systems enable institutional clients—including Tier 1 banks, custodians, and depositories—to maintain private keys, enforce policy settings, and manage compliance within their own secure data centers.

This approach ensures compliance with regulatory requirements such as data residency, the Data Operational Resilience Act (DORA) in the EU, and audit standards set by the US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC). IBM’s mainframe-based confidential computing and hardware security modules help institutions address concerns that have limited adoption of cloud-only digital asset custody.

Mini dictionary: ISO 20022, an international standard for electronic data interchange between financial institutions, aims to streamline global payments and messaging by providing a unified format for all financial communications.

Competitive Landscape and Market Growth

The IBM Swift ledger aims to compete with digital asset platforms such as Fireblocks, Anchorage Digital, Taurus, and Metaco, a digital asset custody firm owned by Ripple. Unlike these largely cloud-native platforms using multiparty computation (MPC), IBM leverages its existing presence in systemically important banks’ core infrastructure.

For asset exchanges and funds, tokenized deposits can now be issued inside their secured networks while retaining seamless interoperability via Swift’s messaging rails.

RWA.xyz, a platform tracking real-world asset tokenization, reports that as of September 2026, tokenized treasuries and cash equivalents have surpassed $7 billion, compared to less than $2 billion at the start of 2024. The sector’s rapid growth is attributed to demand for improved intraday liquidity, collateral mobility, and programmable settlement features.

Future Developments and Industry Tests

Swift has previously carried out interoperability tests with Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP), and major financial institutions such as JPMorgan and Citi are also advancing their own rival tokenized deposit networks. IBM’s initiative marks a shift from pilot experiments to embedding blockchain-powered tokenization directly within the infrastructure banks use daily.

IBM expects to begin beta testing with select banks in the fourth quarter of 2026, with upcoming milestones including integration with Swift’s pre-validation tools, payment controls, and connections to wholesale central bank digital currency (CBDC) pilots.

If these efforts succeed, the IBM Swift ledger could provide the backend framework for delivering 24/7 programmable bank money into blockchain markets via trusted institutional messaging.
