Artificial Intelligence enthusiasts, we are closely following every development in the field, aren’t we? The advancements are so rapid that it’s not an exaggeration to say they are dizzying. A recent development came from OpenAI. This time, it’s a resignation news. Let’s look into the details.

The Team Advocating AI Ethics is No More

Recently, the departure of OpenAI security researchers has sparked a significant debate about priorities and philosophical approaches in the AI industry. Specifically, the disbandment of OpenAI’s “Superalignment” team, which emphasized the ethical dimensions of AI development, has caused a major stir in the sector.

Following the departure of OpenAI’s chief scientist and co-founder Ilya Sutskever, former DeepMind researcher Jan Leike also decided to leave. Leike’s resignation seems to represent the silencing of a voice that emphasized the importance of AI safety. Leike explained his departure by stating that the company prioritized product development over AI safety concerns.

Leike’s Concerns

Leike‘s concerns are based on the belief that as artificial general intelligence (AGI) development progresses, there should be more emphasis on safety and preparedness. AGI is a term used for a hypothetical AI that performs at or better than human levels. After spending three years at OpenAI, Leike expressed that the company did not allocate enough resources to safety research, highlighting a significant shortfall in this area.

Last year, OpenAI appeared to focus on AI safety and preparedness by establishing a new research team. However, the recent resignations and the decision to disband the Superalignment team and integrate its functions into other research projects may indicate a shift in the company’s priorities.

Ethical Issues Will Be Discussed More

These developments once again underscore the importance of ethical and safety issues in the AI development process. In the future, the AI industry must continue to devote more attention and resources to finding the most effective ways to use technology for the benefit of humanity.

While advancing in AI development is important, ensuring that these advancements are safe and ethical for the entirety of humanity will be equally crucial.
