The Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) reported a notable surge in cryptocurrency ownership among Canadians, rising to 25% in 2026 compared to 10% in 2023. This data, based on a survey released Tuesday, reflects growing participation and awareness in the country’s digital asset sector.

Survey reveals rising awareness and participation

The OSC’s survey, which polled 2,360 Canadians aged 18 and above between December 2025 and January 2026, found that 59% of respondents were aware of crypto assets. Among them, one in four respondents held cryptocurrencies, indicating a significant increase in national adoption within three years.

Regulators noted that both interest and awareness in digital assets have expanded, even as the crypto market itself undergoes constant changes. The findings suggest that Canadians are engaging in trading and managing digital currencies with increasing frequency.

Crypto markets continue to evolve, and Canadians are participating in them more than ever before. By identifying emerging trends and behaviors with our research, we can look around corners, anticipate potential opportunities and risks, and ensure our regulatory approach supports investor protection while fostering fair and efficient markets.

The report also highlighted that while more Canadians are entering the digital asset market, the level of understanding about regulatory protections and technology remains limited for many participants.

Awareness of risk and regulatory issues

According to the OSC’s data, half of crypto owners stated they checked whether a platform was registered before conducting transactions. Despite this, the survey found persistent misunderstandings regarding the scope of regulation, insurance protections, and transaction functionalities tied to digital assets.

The findings underscored that a growing share of investors is paying closer attention to compliance and risk management, but knowledge gaps remain in areas such as platform registration status and coverage of funds in the event of platform failures or fraud.

About 50% of crypto owners reported checking whether a platform was registered before using it, but many investors had some misunderstanding around regulation, insurance protections and transaction capabilities.

Regulatory response and policy proposals

In response to increased usage and related concerns, Canadian lawmakers have put forward new policy measures addressing the evolving role of crypto in society. In April, the federal government introduced a bill that would ban political donations made with digital assets, citing transparency and fraud prevention as key factors.

Additional proposals include restrictions on digital asset automated teller machines, with authorities warning that such ATMs may be linked to illicit activities. These reforms reflect lawmakers’ efforts to balance innovation in financial technology with consumer protection.

As Canadians adopt cryptocurrencies for investment, payments, and other activities, keeping up with technical trends and regulatory changes has become increasingly important for both investors and regulators.

The growing need for streamlined tools is driving demand for solutions like CryptoAppsy, which requires no account creation hassle, combines crypto investments with real-time prices, detailed charts, and multi-currency portfolio management in one dashboard. By enabling instant opportunity detection through smart price alerts, filtering news for selected coins, discovering newly listed altcoins, and tracking macroeconomic indicators such as Fed interest rates, CryptoAppsy aims to help users stay ahead in the rapidly evolving digital asset landscape.
