Trezor has activated support for the ERC-7730 standard, enabling clear signing on its latest hardware wallets in an effort to address longstanding challenges in crypto transaction security. The move comes as growing numbers of hardware devices and protocols aim to make blockchain transactions more transparent for users.
ERC-7730 standard gains momentum
The ERC-7730 standard allows compatible crypto wallets to decode smart contract transactions and present detailed information such as the actual action, tokens, amounts, and destination addresses on users’ device screens, rather than displaying unreadable hexadecimal data.
Trezor’s adoption of clear signing, confirmed by both the company and the Ethereum Foundation on September 8, marks the next step in a broader industry push for transaction clarity. The Foundation began this security initiative in May, extending its efforts to additional hardware wallet models.
Addressing the risks of blind signing
Historically, blockchain users faced major risks when signing transactions, as they often had to approve operations based on a description visible on their computer screens but sign an opaque hash on their hardware wallets. Malicious actors who compromised users’ computers could manipulate on-screen information, leaving them unable to verify transaction details at the device level.
The vulnerability known as blind signing has been attributed to some of the costliest crypto heists, including the $1.5 billion Bybit hack, which remains the largest crypto-related breach on record. When the Ethereum Foundation first introduced solutions aimed at this issue, it cited such high-profile incidents as evidence of the need for standardized transaction visibility.
Clear signing makes the hardware wallet the final source of truth, not the computer to which it’s connected. Trezor has stated that with clear signing enabled, users can review and approve specific details of each transaction directly on their device.
How Trezor implements clear signing
With clear signing active, supported Trezor devices automatically break down and present incoming transactions in plain language. This streamlines the verification process, allowing users to confirm exactly what they are approving without requiring technical expertise.
Trezor users do not need to install extra features or manually enable settings; the functionality is integrated into Trezor Suite, WalletConnect, and Trezor Connect, preserving the familiar workflow. The entire decoding system is open source, consistent with Trezor’s public firmware, and the ERC-7730 standard is itself openly accessible.
The rollout initially supports leading protocols including 1inch, Aave, Lido, Tether, LiFi, and Hyperliquid, with more networks under development. The feature is available on the Trezor Safe 7, Safe 5, Safe 3, and Model T. The Trezor Model One does not support clear signing at this time.
Origins and management of ERC-7730
ERC-7730 originated as an in-house feature at Ledger, which later formalized it as an open standard in 2024. Governance of the standard was subsequently transferred to the Ethereum Foundation to maintain neutrality and encourage broad industry adoption.
Transaction descriptors are maintained in an off-chain registry at clearsigning.org, allowing preexisting smart contracts to participate without redeployment. An attestation layer offers additional security, allowing external auditors to confirm that a transaction descriptor accurately reflects the contract’s real function.
The Ethereum Foundation oversees this infrastructure as part of its Trillion Dollar Security Initiative, the same program responsible for launching the One Trillion Dollar Security Dashboard in February. Security benefits are expected to increase as more protocols contribute descriptors, making the standard most effective when widely adopted.
The protection offered by ERC-7730 grows as additional protocols and networks are added to the registry, strengthening user defenses with each new integration.
