Matthew Sigel, Head of Digital Assets Research at asset manager VanEck, addressed growing concerns about the potential threat posed by quantum computing to Bitcoin‘s cryptography. During a conversation with CNBC, Sigel emphasized that while technological changes in the crypto sector can be gradual due to its decentralized structure, stakeholders are alert to the challenge and are proactively seeking solutions.
Quantum computing raises new security questions
Quantum computing, a technological field leveraging quantum mechanics for computational tasks, has become a focus of debate within the cryptocurrency sector. The core concern is that future advancements could theoretically enable quantum computers to disrupt traditional cryptographic protections securing Bitcoin transactions and wallets. A Bitcoin Security Consortium, which includes BlackRock, Fidelity Digital Assets, and payments firm Block, was established in July to advance open-source projects that provide quantum resilience. These companies contribute both funding and engineering talent to the initiative. Among these proposals is BIP-360, which seeks to introduce a new transaction output type that would help mitigate the long-term risks posed by quantum computing.
