The sudden cancellation of a planned diplomatic trip involving top US officials has triggered volatility in Bitcoin markets. Following US President Donald Trump’s decision to call off the Pakistan visit linked to ongoing Iran talks, the cryptocurrency briefly dropped by $100, catching traders’ attention on the US East Coast around midday.
Trump’s move ripples through Bitcoin prices
Trump intervened at the last moment to halt a trip to Pakistan that had been arranged for his advisers, Steve Witkoff and stepson Jared Kushner, stirring significant reaction in both political and crypto circles. In a statement shared by a FOX reporter on X, Trump explained that he had instructed his team to prepare for takeoff only a few hours earlier, then changed course and canceled the flight.
“Just a short while ago, my guys were preparing to leave. I told them, ‘No, we’re not making an 18-hour flight. We hold all the cards. They can reach out to us anytime, but you’re not to keep making long trips for empty talks.’”
After Trump’s announcement, Bitcoin, which had been approaching the $77,400 mark, fell roughly $100 to $77,351. Data from CryptoAppsy indicated this price movement was largely seen as a correction within the recent trading range.
Diplomatic hopes dashed
The abrupt change in plans for Witkoff and Kushner, who had been preparing for fresh talks in Pakistan, redirected the market’s attention to renewed geopolitical risks. Only a few hours before this development, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had departed Pakistan, signaling weakened expectations for immediate diplomatic progress.
Despite the news, the drop in Bitcoin was limited. Investors mostly viewed the dip as a brief surge in risk rather than a lasting trend reversal, with heightened tensions not resulting in major sell-offs so far.
Markets adopt a wait-and-see approach
Going forward, the focus is squarely on the White House’s next moves and how Iran might respond. Market watchers are closely monitoring whether diplomatic initiatives will regain momentum following this pause.
In addition, Trump is slated to speak at a cryptocurrency conference in Palm Beach, Florida, later in the day. It remains to be seen whether his remarks there will influence the crypto market or affect Bitcoin’s price direction.
