CSD BR, a major Brazilian financial-market infrastructure provider, has initiated the integration of the XRP Ledger (XRPL) into its regulated securities infrastructure. This move marks a significant step in leveraging blockchain technology within the core of Brazil’s financial system.
Partnership with Ripple and CSD BR’s Role
The collaboration is led by Ripple, the US-based technology company known for its contributions to global payments and digital asset solutions. CSD BR serves a critical function in Brazil’s capital markets, providing services such as asset registration and central securities depository operations. The firm maintains authorization from key regulatory institutions, including the Central Bank of Brazil.
The pilot phase of the project will focus on investment fund shares managed by BTG Pactual, one of Brazil’s largest banking groups. According to Ripple executive Luke Judges, this initiative represents the first public integration of the XRP Ledger with a country’s core financial market infrastructure at such a scale.
This is the first time the XRP Ledger is publicly being integrated into core financial market infrastructure of this scale.
CSD BR currently oversees more than BRL 22 trillion in registered assets, underlining the importance and size of this blockchain adoption in Brazil.
Mini dictionary: CSD BR is a regulated Brazilian financial entity specializing in securities depository, governance, and registration for the domestic capital market.
XRP Ledger as the Foundation
The XRP Ledger will initially function as an additional audit and recordkeeping layer for fund shares deposited at CSD BR. Over time, the project aims to expand the scope, potentially enabling broader use of blockchain across Brazil’s large fixed-income markets.
Judges explained that CSD BR selected the XRP Ledger due to its design focus on financial applications and its compatibility with regulated infrastructure. Unlike other potential networks, XRPL will serve as the exclusive blockchain platform within the project, rather than as part of a multi-chain experiment.
“CSD BR chose the XRPL because it was purpose-built for financial use cases and can integrate with existing regulated infrastructure out of the box,” Judges noted.
Today, XRPL is the only blockchain in the stack, according to Judges, emphasizing the network’s central role in the initiative.
Beyond the Proof-of-Concept Stage
Unlike many blockchain projects that remain limited to proof-of-concept pilots, this initiative intends to directly support national financial infrastructure from launch. Silvio Pegado, Ripple Latin America Managing Director, characterized the transition from pilot phase to full-scale deployment as a major achievement for the distributed-ledger sector. He underscored the importance of integrating blockchain technology within the daily operations of regulated capital markets.
The collaboration may set a precedent for how blockchain platforms like XRPL can be adopted in regulated environments and could signal broader adoption in other financial sectors.
